A new draft resolution to check Iran's nuclear ambitions will be announced by the 15-member U.N Security Council by next week, according to the council's president.
Though a date for the vote has not been set, many leaders believe that the resolution will be announced by next week in New York. Confirming the report, current council president, South Africa's U.N. ambassador, Dumisani Kumalo, said, "Between Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, they expect us to have some draft, depending on the discussions the political directors will engage in a phone call on Saturday."
The U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack revealed that his department did not expect the council to ready the draft so soon, adding "Most of the major work on what will be the guts of this resolution, that's what's being worked on now. We expect that that should be able to be wrapped up tomorrow in the conference call."
Meanwhile the French Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin has come out saying that a military strike on Iran will not be a solution to halt its nuclear program, adding that such an exercise will only worsen the already fragile conditions in the region.
"For France, a military intervention is not the solution. I add that a military strike against Iran would have unforeseeable consequences, which would be deeply destabilizing for the whole region", he said in an interview that will be published in the Saturday's edition of the London-based Arabic newspaper Al Hayat.
