FRIDAY, December 28, 2007 (News Locale) - The good old days seem to be returning to the BJP. After having regained Gujarat last week, the BJP is now geared up to dislodge the ruling Congress in Himachal Pradesh.
As the counting of the votes of the Assembly elections got underway this morning, the party has already bagged a clear majority in the 68-member Himachal Pradesh House. Of the 59 results declared till now, BJP has won 35 and the count is likely to up soon. While jubilant BJP workers have already begun their celebrations with saffron gulal, ladoos and flowers, the Congress camp appears to be a dejected lot. At the best, the party is expecting to be a distant second. The prominent seats won by the BJP include Solan, Kotkehloor, Kinnaur, Gagret, Bilaspur, Lahaul and Spiti, Ani, Palampur and Karsog and Geharwin and Hamirpur, while the Congress victories include Satokgarh, Nahan, Baijnath and Kasumta.
Sitting Congress Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh saved the party’s prestige by regaining the Rohru seat defeating his nearest BJP rival Kushiram Balnatah by a margin of 14,137.
On the other hand, the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate P K Dhumal won the Bamsan seat by a margin of 26,000 votes. Elections to the Himachal Pradesh Assembly were held in two phases on November 14 and December 19 and witnessed a huge turn-out, particularly from women electorate. According to political experts, this could have influenced the polling in favor of the BJP.
While Dhumal acknowledged the congratulatory messages pouring in from different parts of the state and the country, BJP national president Rajnath Singh expressed gratefulness to the people for voting the BJP to power. The new government is expected to take the oath of office on December 31.
