SATURDAY, Jan 5, (News Locale) - Mumbai Police have announced that they will conduct an identification parade (TI parade) of the suspects accused of molesting two young women on the New Year Eve in Mumbai on Saturday.
Altogether 14 people were arrested in this connection and let out on bail. But as the case has been put on fast track trial, the police have summoned the two media photographers who had snapped the women being molested to identify the culprits.
According to the police, the accused charges of harassing women, rioting, unlawful assembly, criminal intimidation and causing criminal breach of trust and if convicted, they face up to five years in prison.
It may be mentioned here that the horrific incident took place when two women accompanied by male escorts came out of the Mariot Hotel in Juhu soon after the New Year celebrations had ended.
As the four walked towards the nearby Juhu beach, a mob of about 20 people trailed and teased them. When one of the women protested, the mob, then numbering about 80 people, pounced and molested them in the public.
Two lens men working for a Mumbai newspaper happened to be at the site and snapped the unlawful proceedings. They also alerted the police who saved the women by chasing away the unruly mob.
However, no one was arrested till then and the police seemed to take up the issue in a lighter vein. Initially the Mumbai Police Commissioner D N Jadhav dismissed the case as an insignificant one and charged the media for exaggerating the incident for cheap publicity.
Later the women were identified as NRIs and one of their husbands told the police that the couple had been married just three days ago in Gujarat and had been to Mumbai to celebrate the New Year.
The husband who hailed from California raised an alarm and the media highlighted the incident on the following day compelling the police and the Maharashtra government to swing into action. It was then that the police arrested 14 accused, while two are said to be still absconding.
