WEDNESDAY, JAN 2, 2008(, News Locale) - Mumbai, the nation’s economic capital and also being the most socialite metropolis in the country, was shamed when a mob of 70 to 80 men mishandled and molested two women outside a 5-star hotel in Juhu in the early hours of the New Year's Day.
According to reports, the bizarre incident occurred when the women, one clothed in a black dress and the other dressed in a jeans and top, came out of the JW Marriott with two male friends around 1:45 am and took to the nearby Juhu beach.
Soon a mob of around 40 people trailed and teased the four and when a woman raised an alarm and shouted at the hooligans, they ensnared the women between a tree and a vehicle.
By then the mob had swollen to around 80 people and they pounced upon the two women in rage and brutal passion. Soon a man in a white shirt ripped open the black dress and another in a blue shirt spearheaded the battering. Unable to bear the assault, the two women dropped to the ground and more men jumped on them. As the women fell on the ground, dozens of men leaped on them.
The sordid act continued for well over 15 minuses till a media lens man who was witness to the gruesome incident alerted a police patrol party, which chased the mob away.
While no one has been arrested in connection with the crime, the police are yet to register a case in this regard. When contacted, Mumbai Western range ACP Archana Tyagi said that the police are trying to ascertain the facts published in a local media and have already contacted the traffic police on duty at the place during the incident for investigation. She, however, admitted that the incident was a shocking one and the culprits would be dealt strict punishment.
The ACP further said that the police have got in touch with the girls and they were found to be from outside Mumbai. Meanwhile, ad guru and playwright Alyque Padamse has described the incident as a black spot on the social life of Mumbai.
''Mumbai is heading towards being the Delhi jungle, where women are attacked every hour. Even if there is no complaint from the girls, police should take action immediately. I am ashamed to live in a city, where there is disrespect all around,'' he said.
Incidentally, this is the second incident of its kind in the metropolis in a span of just one year. On the 2007 New Year’s Eve, a similar incident had shamed Mumbai when a girl was molested by revelers at the Gateway of India. Last year, inebriated revelers had stripped and molested a woman in public view, as her friend watched vulnerably.
