MONDAY Dec 24, 2007 (News Locale) - The last rites of the two Indian students gunned down by anonymous assailants at the Louisiana State University in the US almost two weeks ago were performed in their native towns in Andhra Pradesh in the presence of a large number of people, including family members, friends and local people on Sunday.
While Kiran Kumar Allam's funeral was held at Manchiryal in Adilabad district, his friend Chandrasekhar Reddy Komma was cremated in Kurnool. According to reports, Kurnool MP Kotla Suryaprakash Reddy and other local leaders who paid their last respects to Chandrasekhar Reddy have demanded that the Centre initiate requisite measures to ensure the security of Indian students in the US.
Earlier in the day, bodies of the two PhD students, who were found shot dead at the Edward Gay Complex, were flown in from the US and were taken to their respective hometowns.
Thirty-three-year-old Kiran Kumar, a PhD student in chemistry and son of distinguished writer Allam Rajaiah, was scheduled to complete his studies next year.
On the other hand, Chandrashekhar Reddy, son of a forest department official, was pursuing his doctorate in bio-chemistry. According to reports, Kumar’s pregnant wife Swapna, who had tied the knot only nine months back, was the first to discover the two dead bodies at an apartment in Edward Gay Complex and informed the police about the crime.
Soon after this, the US police swung into action and released sketches of the suspects in the case. While investigations are still on, according to the police, two miscreants had entered Kumar’s apartment and shot both the students dead. Incidentally, the gruesome murders of Kumar and Reddy are the first killings on the campus since the early 1990s.
