THURSDAY, Feb 7, (News Locale) - The alleged mastermind behind the shocking kidney racket in Gurgaon has been arrested by Nepalese police even as he tried to flee a hotel. The story of Dr Amit Kumar's arrest was first revealed by the Himalayan Times.
Dr Amit Kumar had fled the country soon after the kidney racket was busted. Media reports had indicated he was either in Nepal or in Canada. Interpol had issued a red corner notice against the absconding doctor.
Dr Kumar was nabbed by the Kathmandu Police along with his associate Manish Singh. Both men were staying at the Hotel Wildlife Camp in a jungle resort area in Nepal. It is also reported that police recovered $1, 45,000 and 936 Euro from his room.
The Himalayan Times newspaper reported that Dr Kumar was nabbed after police arrived at the hotel and showed his picture to the receptionist. The alleged kidney racket mastermind was sporting sunglasses and a hat and he tried to run away even as police arrived there.
The hunt for Dr Santosh Raut alias Amit Kumar had intensified since the last two days. His kidney racket came to light last Friday after his hospital was raided on the basis of a complaint launched by a laborer who said his kidney was removed without his knowledge.
Dr Amit is believed to have duped over 500 people and removed their kidneys illegally for "clients" in Britain, the US, Greece, Lebanon, Canada, Saudi Arabia and Dubai.
Nepal's Minister of State for Home Ram Choudhri confirmed an individual named Amit Kumar had been arrested. It is not clear if he would be immediately extradited to India.
