Surat, July 30 (ANI): Gujarat police defuses yet another bomb in Surat on Wednesday after 18 low-intensity bombs were found and defused in the city on Tuesday. 

The live bomb was found from the Varacha area of Surat today.

A shopkeeper in the Baroda prestige locality in Varacha, which houses the 70-crore diamond polishing market, spotted the bomb.

However with the timely arrival of the bomb disposal squad the live bomb was diffused.

Surat, one of the world's biggest diamond-polishing centres has been turned into a carpet of live bombs.

On Tuesday, Police defused 18 bombs.

According to the police, the bombs on Tuesday were all found in one of Surat most crowded neighbourhoods, but gave no details about the nature of the explosives or who could have placed them.

Extra police were deployed on the streets of Surat. Schools closed early and children sent back home. Large crowds gathered in the streets to watch police defuse the bombs.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Narendra Modi visited the city and held a meeting with top police officials.

Following the discovery of the bombs in Surat, a high alert was also sounded in various parts of the country.

A group called the "Indian Mujahideen" said it carried out the Ahmedabad attack, writing in an e-mail sent five minutes before the first blast that it was in revenge for a 2002 massacre in Gujarat of around 2,500 people, mainly Muslims, by Hindu mobs.

The sophistication of the recent wave of bomb attacks in India has caught the country's police and intelligence networks unaware and triggered fears of more attacks by the group. (ANI)
