The Congress-led coalition government in Goa was plunged into crisis after 3 NCP MLAs and one Independent withdrew their support, reducing the government to a minority.
MLAs Nilkanth Halarnkar, Jose Philip and Mickey Pacheco from NCP and Independent candidate Vishwajeet Rane withdrew their support from the government after disagreements cropped up over the Rajiv Gandhi IT Habitat.
With the revolt, Goa Chief Minister Digambar Kamat now enjoys support of just 18 MLAs, 16 from the Congress and two from the Save Goa Front. Congress legislator Shyam Satardekar is also expected to resign from his position. Goa is fasting gaining notoriety for political instability with the state having 21 chief ministers in the past two decades.
However in spite of his government looking set to fall, Kamat expressed confidence stating that he has talked with NCP supremo Sharad Pawar who has assured him that the party will not be withdrawing support.
"I have already had talks with Sharad Pawar and he has assured me that NCP will not withdraw support. He has even said that if there are any issues they will be resolved", Kamat said. However the state party leader Jose Philip D'Souza said that there is no way that the party will be supporting Congress and the MLAs have already tendered their registrations to the Governor.
The Bharatiya Janata Party quickly seized the opportunity and demanded that the Governor dismiss the Congress-led government. Leader of the Opposition, Manohar Parrikar said that he will be contacting the Governor to state the opposition's demands.
"I am going to write to the governor saying that today's incident has clearly proved that the government is in minority. Therefore His Excellency should either dismiss the government or ask them to prove the majority", Parrikar said.
The Congress high command has stepped into damage control mode with AICC General Secretary Hari Prasad and Siddharth Patel scheduled to arrive in Goa to diffuse the situation. The NCP has also sent Praful Patel to the state as both the parties look to resolve their differences.
