FRIDAY, JAN 4 (News Locale) - The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today revealed that Rizwan-ur Rehman had indeed committed suicide and had not been murdered as was supposed earlier. However the family of his wife Priyanka Todi was thought to have encouraged the graphics designer to take his own life.
Rizwanur Rehman’s body was found beside railway tracks in the Park Circus area of Kolkata on September 21. The death was treated as a suicide early on but Rizwanur's elder brother Rukbanur alleged in a FIR that Rizwanur had been killed as he had married Priyanka Todi against the wishes of her industrialist father Ashok Todi.
Rizwanur and Priyanka had married on August 18 Special Marriage Act. Priyanka returned to her father's home on September 8 after the couple was summoned to the Lalbazar police station thrice in just under three weeks.
Just about two weeks after Priyanka returned to the Todi house, her husband was found dead near the railway tracks.
Intense media attention brought to light the alleged complicity of Kolkata Police with Todi. The Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into the crime on October 17. Police officers with involvement in this incident were suspended by West Bengal Chief Minister Buddadeb Bhattacharya on October 18.
Revealing the results of the probe, the CBI said it could prove scientifically that Rizwanur had committed suicide and was not murdered.
Sources from CBI said the agency had been able to retrieve a suicide note from the computer of Rehman's maternal aunt. The latter had deleted the letter following his death. CBI sources said the letter showed the precarious state of mind of Rizwanur as he was not being allowed to meet Priyanka.
The CBI said that a close relative of Priyanka had in fact abetted Rizwan's suicide. The CBI is due to present the full report before the High Court on Tuesday next.
