London, June 18 (ANI): An Indian man was arrested for cheating and robbing an English woman out of more than 80,000 pounds after faking a holiday romance with her in Goa and setting up a home with her in Kashmir, it has emerged.
Patrina Churm, who is 25 years older than Mukhtar Ahmad Guroo has now been left "penniless and terrified" and is also worried for her safety.
It was after the break up of her marriage and the death of her father that this divorcee from Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, flew to Goa and fell in love with Guroo, whom she first met 16 years back selling handicrafts.
This love struck lady sold up her life in England and set up a home with him in Kashmir, but later discovered that he had emptied her bank account, and left to survive her to survive on just 2.17 pounds, while he went to marry a local girl.
It was when Churm, 55, contacted the police that Guroo was arrested, but she claims that her life is under threat from his family who may allegedly get her killed if she did not drop a court case against him.
She said that she had known Guroo, 30, ever since she first began visiting Goa on holiday in the early 1990s and it was during a 2004 holiday she fell in love with him when he "pulled out all the stops".
"I'm too bloody naïveMy father had died, my marriage had broken up and I believed him and trusted him. It was a beach romance," Telegraph quoted her, as telling The Daily Telegraph.
When they bought their beautiful country house close to Srinagar, he told her that it had to be registered in his name, as the authorities did not allow foreigners to own property there.
However, it was late last year that she came to know that Guroo had secretly drained off money from her British bank accounts using her cashcard and even snapped more than 10,000 pounds in cash, which she carried with her to India for buying a flat in Goa.
On confronting, he gave her a cheque, which bounced and she later came to know from a neighbour that he had conned her and was planning to marry a local girl later this year.
According to an investigating officer, Guroo then threw her out of their home after using up all her money.
"I'm looking over my shoulder the whole time. In India life is so cheap. His family are militants and for £125 you can have someone killed. Over a period of 12 to 14 months, he emptied out my bank accounts. There was £83,000 and now there is £2.17 in my account. He has bought enough land to build a house on, and I have nothing," said Churm.
She added: "I have no property in Britain or India, I'm penniless and terrified. I'm depending on the goodwill of neighbours in Kashmir. I'm living in their house, they're feeding me, giving me clothes to wear and putting their lives in danger by helping me."
When this British woman took her plea to the Human Rights Commission, they alerted the police, leading to Guroo’s arrest. He now, faces charges of cheating, preparing fake documents, and conspiracy to cheat Miss Churm out of money." (ANI)
