Ever since India won the Twenty20 World Championships, there have been whispers on the need to cull senior players from the Indian One-Day team. Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid are past it and can only play Tests, pundits argued.
And after the two defeats to Australia in the ongoing seven match series, knifes were out for these distinguished seniors. Chairman of selectors Dilip Vengsarkar compounded the situation by saying that seniors cannot take their places for granted.
However yesterday's performance in Chandigarh should have put any doubts to rest as Sachin Tendulkar and Ganguly were instrumental in India amassing 291. Tendulkar looked scratchy, but he hung in there and his 79 off 119 balls went a long way in giving India a steady start, which they had lacked in Kochi and Hyderabad.
Ganguly was also his calm self stroking his way to 41 in 59 balls. After the match, Dhoni was at pains to highlight the need for seniors. "Credit should go to Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly for giving us a good start," Dhoni said.
With over 35,000 runs between them Dravid, Tendulkar and Ganguly form the bulwark around which the present team can play. Talk of dropping them is premature to say the least.
India needs players of their caliber as they embark on a journey to regain lost glory, especially in the One-Day arena. With difficult series against Pakistan and a trip to the Oz coming up, Dhoni will need their wise heads to maintain his cool; both on and off the field.
