SATURDAY, JAN 19, (News Locale) - Indian ace Sania Mirza was left ruing her sticky serve after she crashed out of the Australian Open to big hitting Venus Williams. The 31st seed had plenty of opportunities to close out the first set, but squandered them all as she lost 6-7 (0/7) 4-6 to the former Wimbledon champion.
The elder of the Williams' sisters is on a comeback trail and the third round clash against the hard hitting Mirza tested her to the limit. However she overcame starting trouble to level the first set at 6-6 after being down 3-5. The tie-breaker was a smooth sail as she served it out 7-0. Venus now plays the winner of the game between Na Li of China and Marta Domachowska of Poland in the next round.
The 21-year-old Mirza, who confessed to contemplating quitting tennis following a row over the Indian flag, committed 30 unforced errors. In the end it was these errors that proved to be the difference.
"Obviously, I'm a little disappointed because I felt I had the first set and should have closed it out at 5-4," Sania said after the game. "I'm very critical about my game. I think I'm one of the worst servers in the game."
The women's field is now wide open at Melbourne after second-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova was knocked out by Poland's Agnieszka Radwanska in the third round yesterday.
In the men's section World number one and defending champion Roger Federer survived a scare as he overcame Janko Tipsarevic 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-1) 5-7 6-1 10-8 in a marathon match that lasted four hours and 27 minutes.
