The mark of champions, experts say, is to win matches in which they have played badly. If the saying holds any water, then Manchester United look all set to lift their first title in 3 years as they opened a 12 point gap over second placed Chelsea with a lucky 1-0 victory over Liverpool.
Down to 10 men with 5 minutes to go, United pushed for the goal that would have provided them with a psychological advantage over Chelsea, who play on Sunday, and were rewarded when John O'Shea scored in the injury time to kill off the match.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez kept his promise of fielding a string side and his team controlled vast portions of the match without any luck. John Arne Riise created the first chance of the match on 26th minute when his low driven free-kick was just inches away from hitting the net.
Four minutes later, United looked to have conceded the goal when Bellamy snatched the ball from Vidic but his low cross flashed across the goal with no one to convert it. Second half was the mirror of the first as Liverpool laid siege on United goal but were unlucky not to score.
With 18 minutes left, United suffered a blow when Rooney limped off the field and was replaced by John O'Shea. United got their first real chance when Reina had to be alert to save a header from Ronaldo. Things got worse for United when Scholes was sent off with 5 minutes remaining when he clashed with Alonso.
Crouch looked to have got the winner but Van der Sar produced a brilliant save to keep United in the match. With time running out and the match seemingly heading for a stalemate, United took the lead from an unlikely source.
Ronaldo's free kick in the injury time was parried by Reina only for O'Shea to get to the rebound and put the ball into the net, sending droves of United faithful at Anfield into frenzy.
Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted with the victory saying that the result was "massive" reagrding his team's title hopes. "It was a fantastic result. We had a lot of narrow escapes and Liverpool upset our rhythm. It is a massive result for us. There is a 12-point difference but I don`t think anything is impossible in modern-day football. In 1998 we had a great lead going into an Arsenal match but we had some terrible injuries", he said.
