THURSDAY, April 17, (News Locale) - When Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan brought the Kolkata Knight Riders team in the IPL for a reported cost of Rs 300 crore, may eyebrows were raised. This is because the IPL as a business model is yet to taste success.
However King Khan had no qualms of taking over the Kolkata team and since then he has done everything in his power to ensure the IPL concept is a success. The setback in the form of Shoaib Akhtar's ban by the Pakistan Cricket Board was also taken in his stride by SRK.
He hopes Shoaib can still play, but said Sourav Ganguly, who captains the Knight Riders, had assured him the team was balance even in Shoaib's absence. "Even if Akhtar can come midway through the tournament, I would like him to play," SRK said.
The actor also admits that most franchises will lose money initially. In an interview to the Times of India, SRK said that it would take time for the IPL as a business model to grow, "If God forbid the losses are huge, then I am sure the IPL will look into it," he added.
SRK was also not worried about the low ticket sales, saying that unlike films, this was cricket and that the sales would pick up gradually.
Kolkata Knight Riders is coached by former Aussie coach John Buchanan and also includes Ricky Ponting, Chris Gayle, Ishant Sharma and Ajit Agarkar. The team kicks off the IPL on April 18 with a match against the Bangalore Royal Challengers.
