When Sreesanth broke into an impromptu jig after clattering Andre Nel for a six against South Africa in Johannesburg, India watched mesmerized by his antics. "Ah" said the experts, "here is one Indian who can give it as good as it gets."
Cut to October 2, 2007 when India played Australia at Sreesanth's backyard in Kochi. Andrew Symonds and Brad Haddin were going great guns and Sreesanth chose this moment to make his aggression obvious. This time the experts ruefully shook their heads. "This will be his undoing," they predicted.
Sure enough, stand-in captain Adam Gilchrist did not take kindly to Sreesanth's behavior. "I also saw a few things I wouldn't have probably expected even from my son Harrison in a backyard game of cricket. But I'll move on," said Gilchrist.
If Sreesanth features in the Indian line-up for the Hyderabad one-dayer expect some fireworks from Aussie bats.
His captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, fresh from leading a young side to the first-ever World Twenty20 title, does not need such headaches. Especially at a time when India trails 1-0 in the series.
"When it started I thought Sreesanth was joking, but after a while I realized that he's quite serious about it. I went up to him and said, look, that's not the way to get a batsman out, we'll get him out some other way, that's what I said to him," Dhoni explained.
But this is not the first time "Sree" has lost it. After the infamous South Africa incident, Sreesanth was involved in shoulder-butting England captain Michael Vaughn, for which he was docked match fees. Later on it was thought he deliberately hurled a beamer at Kevin Petersen although he immediately apologized.
More recently he was fined 25 per cent of his match fee by the ICC for indulging in excessive appealing in the T20 semi final against Australia.
At the unprecedented celebrations at the Wankhede following their win, Dhoni had remarked that every team needed someone like Sreesanth. He will now be wondering if he spoke a tad prematurely!
