MONDAY, April 7, (News Locale) - A stuttering Olympic torch relay in India received its biggest boost after Sachin Tendulkar confirmed that he will be participating event that takes place in New Delhi on April 17.
The news was confirmed by Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi who revealed that the master blaster had personally called up to ask whether he could take part in the event.
Tendulkar will be joined by eminent sportspersons including Leander Paes, Milkha Singh, Jyoti Randhawa along with other personalities like actor duo Saif and Soha Ali Khan, Ingram Micro India CEO Jaishankar Krishnan and the CEO of Tata Consultancy Services Subramanian Ramadorai.
Tendulkar's participation will provide some relief for the IOA that has come under intense pressure following widespread protests following the crackdown by Chinese government on Tibetan protestors.
Kalmadi also spoke on the security arrangements set up on the relay route. The length of the route has been shortened by six kilometers and thousands of Delhi policmen will put up a security umbrella, which will include anti-terror and anti-sabotage measures, along the route.
"The government has taken up the issue and I think all security concerns will be taken care of. We are also planning out how to host the relay and I am hopeful that we will carry it out unhindered", Kalmadi said.
