As apprehended, the Indian cricket team’s practice camp has literally come under the clouds. Owing to the incessant drizzles that have been niggling Kolkata for the last two days, Team India’s practice nets had to be shifted from the Eden Gardens in the city to indoor facilities.
According to the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint secretary Samar Pal, the two-day practice session of the Indian cricketers has now been shifted to the Pankaj Gupta Indoor Coaching Camp housed in the Eden Gardens premises as rains disturbed the opening day practice sessions on Friday. Facilities in the well-equipped indoor coaching centre include three nets a swimming pool and a modern gymnasium.
Pal said that the ground at the Enden Gardens is still wet and despite putting two super soppers into use to soak the water for a proper outdoor practice for the cricketers, the CAB’s efforts were nullified as two hours’ showers this morning got the ground to the square one.
The indoor practice will ensure that no player risks injury by tuning up on the lush-green ground rendered soggy and slippery by the rains. All through the day, the sky remained cloudy along with periodic drizzles since morning.
While former Indian captain and local south paw Saurav Ganguly has been practicing at the center for the last couple of days, other members of Team India too began arriving in the city since this morning to tone up before the important series against arch rivals Pakistan from November 5 at Guwahati.
Fielding coach Robin Singh and pacer S Sreesanth reached the city early this morning, while master blaster Schin Tendulkar and skipper M S Dhoni were in by a Mumbai flight later. Offie Harbhajan Singh too reached the city from New Delhi. All the members were guided to the team hotel in south Kolkata under heavy security cover.
India will play five ODIs against Pakistan in the ensuing series. The other matches in the rubber are to be held at Mohali (November 8), Kanpur (November 11), Gwalior (November 15) and Jaipur (November 18).
