Andy Murray reached his fifth semifinal match in the last six events after Andy Roddick, who was his opponent in the quarterfinals of the Miami Masters, had to retire following a strained left hamstring during the match on Wednesday.
The quarterfinal match was a painful one for Roddick, who had earlier called on his trainer after experiencing a hip injury. However eight games into the first set, Roddick could not take the pain any longer and had to call off the match. Murray was leading the set 5-3.
Commenting on his injury Roddick said, "I just kind of jarred something at first. More and more it started becoming like a sharp pain, and then I started feeling it even when I was just kind of cruising around the court, not even in points. It was steadily getting worse, which isn’t a good sign."
The game started evenly, though Murray had two break points in the second game but could not convert both of them. However with the score at 4-3, a struggling Roddick requested an off-court treatment. Though he was able to come back onto the court, it was clear that the injury was hampering the American's movement.
Murray took advantage of Roddick's injury to break him in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead. However Roddick could not continue further and had to call off the match. Though delighted to have reached the semifinals, Murray wanted it to be in a more traditional style.
"Anybody would rather get off the court quicker than longer. But I wish it was in normal circumstances. It was unfortunate that he had to pull out. I'm definitely looking forward to the semis. I'm in good shape and I've got a lot of rest time and I'm feeling good going into it", he added.
Murray will now face either Rafael Nadal or Serbian Novak Djokovic in the semis.
