Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson had a nightmarish day yesterday as he was set upon by a supposedly crazed man at London's Euston Station. The assault occurred as Sir Alex alighted from the Manchester train in London.
He was in the City to attend a function for the Society for Multiple Sclerosis. The event was organized by City traders to mark the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, according to a report in the Daily Mirror.
The Manchester United manager was repeatedly kicked on the shins and between his legs by the crazed attacker who kept heaping football-related abuse at the 65-year-old Scot.
A spokesman for Manchester United confirmed reports of an attack, "There was some sort of altercation. Sir Alex was kicked. Someone was taken away. Sir Alex was in London for a function which he successfully attended," he said, adding that the attacker was not personally known to Sir Alex.
The Manchester United boss was in pain, but managed to alert a British Transport Community Support Officer who arrested a 43-year-old man. Sir Alex did not suffer any injuries and did not need treatment, it is reported.
“Following assaults on a member of the public and a BTP Police Community Support Officer at Euston Rail station at about 4.15pm on Monday," a British Transport Police spokesman said. The 43-year-old man has been identified as one Kevin Reynolds. He is due to appear at Westminster City Magistrates court today.
Manchester United are currently at the eighth spot in the Premiership table after an indifferent start to the season. They face Everton in their next game on Saturday.
