Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have got entangled in an avoidable mess after the board accused the actor of using the ongoing ODI series to promote his latest Hindi flick ‘Om Shanti Om’.
While the issue has upset Shah Rukh Khan so much that he has vowed never to be a spectator at match involving the Indian team, former cricketer Kapil Dev has come out openly in support of the actor.
Shah Rukh’s presence at the fifth and final ODI versus Pakistan in Jaipur raised a lot of attractions and this had annoyed the organizers, who accused the actor of using the platform to promote his recently-released film “Om Shanti Om”.
What actually sparked off the tension is the actor’s move to speak about the film during an interview with the broadcaster after the match. This has not been taken kindly by the organizers.
The issue took an interesting turn as there are media reports that Shah Rukh Khan is trying to take the franchise of one of the teams in the ensuing Indian Premier League (IPL) organized by the BCCI to counter the rival league by Zee TV.
Although Shah Rukh has been a great fan of cricket and has been present on the ground on many occasions, including the recently held Twenty-20 World Championship, the board’s remarks seem to be harsh.
Incidentally, many even consider Shah Rukh to be a lucky mascot of the Indian team as it has won most of the matches where he was present. "I am disappointed," Shah Rukh said, adding, "I take my children to watch the match and if someone asks me a question about my film, I will obviously answer them."
Thus, the actor has vowed that he wouldn’t ever visit to any venue where the Indian team would be playing. He has virtually taken a pledge. On the other hand, Kapil has backed Shah Rukh saying all cricket fans had the right to be a spectator at any match of his choice.
Amidst all this controversy, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla said in a statement that the board has no objection if any film star watches any matches involving the national team as the board does not think the players get distracted by film stars or any other spectator.
