Indian hockey coach Joaquim Carvalho was furious with politicians even as they hogged the limelight in unprecedented celebrations as victorious Indian cricketers returned home with the first Twenty20 world championship trophy.
India won the Asia Cup by routing Korea 7-2 recently and Carvalho feels the national game is getting a step-motherly treatment.
"Why was the same recognition not given to the hockey players when they won the Asia Cup? Where were the same state governments? The monetary benefit is not the issue, the issue is about the recognition," Carvalho said on CNN-IBN.
The state governments have fallen over themselves in recognizing the cricketers with large cash awards to players. The BCCI has also announced a reward of $ 2 million for the successful team, whereas the hockey players were paid a paltry Rs 1,000 (less than $25) per goal, but were fined Rs 2,000 if they conceded a goal.
Carvalho said four players, namely V.R. Raghunath, Ignace Tirkey, Vikram Kanth and S.V. Sunil and their coach Ramesh Parmeshwaram and manager R.K. Shetty had asked permission to hold a hunger strike in front of the residence of the Karnataka Chief Minister.
“The Karnataka Chief Minister has announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh for Robin Uthappa and bowling coach Venkatesh Prasad. However, he has not even congratulated the players from his state who brought laurels for the country by winning the Asia Cup," Carvalho pointed out.
The coach said that it was not a question of money, but of recognition that the players had performed for the country on international stage as well.
