WEDNESDAY Nov 14, 2007 (News Locale) - Former Indian cricket coach Greg Chappell has alleged that he was the subject of a racist attack in India during his coaching tenure. The dour Aussie believes that the attack by an Indian fan in Bhubaneswar in Orissa in January this year had racist overtones and that the Board of Control for Cricket in India attempted to hide this.
Speaking to The Australian newspaper, Chappell said he sent a letter to the BCCI regarding the issue, but that they never followed this up. Chappell was punched by a disgruntled fan at the Bhubaneswar airport when India played the West Indies in a One-Day International earlier this year.
That attack was seen as being motivated by the fact that there were no Orissa players in the Indian squad. However Chappell says this was not so.
"If that was the case why didn't he accost the chairman of selectors or someone else who might have been involved in the selection process?" Chappell told The Australian. "Why would he attack one of the foreigners in the group -- me as coach? There's a bit more to it than that."
Chappell's revelations follow allegations of racist abuse by Indian fans made on Andrew Symonds during Australia's recent tour of India. Chappell resigned as coach after India's forgettable World Cup campaign.
He has made these allegations in a documentary to be aired by the ABC television channel next week. The documentary focuses on his two-year tenure as the coach of the Indian cricket team. Chappell was upset with the lack of action by the BCCI,
"It was quite obvious it was a serious assault. It wasn't just a push in the back as the media was led to believe. The whole thing was played down. The only phone call I got from the BCCI asked me whether it really happened," he revealed.
Chappell's tenure as India's coach was a chequered one and was highlighted by his disagreements with the then captain Sourav Ganguly, which eventually led to the latter being dropped and removed as captain. Ganguly made a comeback into the team for the World Cup and continues to be a part of the Indian team.
