Steven Gerrard was the hero for England as they overcame their own blues to trash Andorra 0-3 in a qualifying match for the Euro 2008. The Liverpool skipper was in fine form as he played a central role in his side's much-needed win.
After a goalless and insipid first half, Gerrard lit up the second period with fine strikes. England fans jeered their team off after a lifeless first 45 minutes. Gerrard though calmed their nerves with a 54-minute 20-yard drive and then doubled England's tally with a clinical finish in the 75 minute.
Debutant David Nugent scored a last-gasp goal to make up the convincing score line for England. Frank Lampard did not play as a result of a broken wrist. Gerrard was shifted to the central midfield role and appeared to relish the switch.
Andorra keeper Koldo Alvarez saved well from Andrew Johnson and Gerrard in the first half. Other than that it was a nasty match in rain-soaked Barcelona with Wayne Rooney and Owen Hargreaves receiving rough treatment.
Although England won comfortably in the end, coach Steve McClaren remains under pressure as evidenced by fans jeering him off. Wayne Rooney's form has been dodgy at best and Gerrard proved he was more comfortable in the center.
