MONDAY, July 14, (News Locale) - Scandal reared its head in the Indian Premier League (IPL) once again as IPL Chairman Lalit Modi confirmed a player's random dope test was found positive by a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory.
Modi revealed he would only get the final analysis on Monday and also said the player's identity may be known only then. Media reports however are speculating the player may be Mohammed Asif who turned out for Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.
"The issue is now with the IPL’s medical committee. The identity of the player will matter only after we check on the pre-declared drugs,” Modi told reporters on Sunday.
Random dope tests were conducted only in the latter part of the billion-dollar extravaganza after doctors revealed some players from remote areas may not be conversant with the banned drugs.
It is unclear if the IPL has authority to take any action againt the player involved especially if he is from a foreign country. The IPL was conducted under the aegis of the BCCI and was played under International Cricket Council (ICC) rules.
The ICC issued a statement saying the onus was on the BCCI to take action. "As with any AAF that arises during a testing programme organized by one of the ICC's Members, it is the responsibility of that Member, in this case the BCCI, to deal with the process in a timely and fair manner," the statement read.
Suspicions on Asif may be justified because the player was held in detention in Dubai for possession of drugs. Furthermore a day before the random dope test Asif sat out the game against Kings XI Punjab ostensibly with an elbow injury that was later described as minor.
Asif has already been on the dope radar serving a one-year ban after testing positive for banned anabolic steroid nandrolone during the Champions Trophy in India in 2006.
