SUNDAY, Mar 30, (News Locale) - The Indian cricket team received a big blow on Sunday when it was reported that master blaster Sachin Tendulkar is likely to miss the second test due to a niggling groin injury.
Even as the first test fizzled out to a tame draw, Tendulkar was conspicuous by his absence after already missing a part of action on the first, second and fourth day. Anil Kumble too was facing a similar problem and the Indian captain decided not take the risk of going to the field as the match was all but over on the fifth day.
Ex-physio John Gloster had already urged Tendulkar to take at least two weeks off after the completion of the Australian tour, warning the 34-year old that his injury was entering a chronic phase.
However Tendulkar declared himself fit for the first test after undergoing fitness tests at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. Mohammad Kaif has been recalled as a replacement for Tendulkar after impressing the selectors by scoring 993 runs in 13 first-class matches.
The first test ended in a draw with South Africa reaching 331/5 at the end of the day's play. Neil McKenzie continued from where he had left off, hitting an undefeated knock of 155 to add to his 94 runs scored in the first innings. Virender Sehwag was named the man of the match for his 319 runs in the first innings.
The second test is scheduled to be played on April 3 in Ahmedabad.
