LONDON - Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player in 30 years to win both the Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year awards on a night that saw as many as eight Manchester United players nominated in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
Ronaldo, who has put to rest speculations about a move away from Old Trafford by signing a new contract that will see him stay at United till 2012, said he was proud with the double and promised to work harder to improve his game. The 22-year old has been in outstanding form for United and has been largely responsible for the team still being in hunt for the treble for the first time since 1999.
With 21 goals in all competitions this season, Ronaldo has been the pivot around whom Manchester United have built a spectacular season. He has also contributed in many goals scored by teammates and has slowly, but surely earned his place in the hearts of United fans.
"It is a special night. It is amazing and a big honour for me to win trophies like this in the English Premier League. I am very proud. My colleagues have voted for me and that is fantastic because the players know the qualities of players. I want to keep working hard and getting better because these trophies have now given me more motivation", he said.
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson was delighted that Ronaldo was awarded both the Player of the Year and the Young Player awards. "When we saw him play in a pre-season friendly for Sporting against us, at half-time I knew we had to get him and I said to [then chief executive] Peter Kenyon 'we are not leaving the stadium until we get the boy'. At this moment in time, I think he is the best player in the world and his season has been incredible", he added. Ferguson was awarded with a Special Merit Award.
The complete list of PFA Premier League Team of the Year is as given below: Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra (all Man Utd); Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo (all Man Utd), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool); Didier Drogba (Chelsea) and Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham)
