Manchester United produced a scintillating display to thrash AS Roma 7-1 to progress into the semifinals of the Champions League. However the match was marred even before the start of the match as fans of the Italian club clashed with police officials.
Trailing 1-2 in the first leg, United ripped through the Roma defense and the match was all but over in the first 20 minutes as they took a comfortable 3-0 lead. Michael Carrick opened the scoring in the 11th minute, smashing the ball into the right-hand corner of the net.
A delightful piece of one-touch passing found Alan Smith in front of the goal and the former Leeds United striker made no mistake to score his first goal since the horrific injury last season. Rooney added the third in 19th minute, latching on a low cross by Ryan Giggs from the right wing.
Just when it looked that Roma had somehow managed to stem the tide of goals, Ronaldo got into the act just a minute before half time after the Roma defense backed up too much, allowing the Portuguese winger to shoot and he obliged gleefully.
United continued to persist in the second half and were rewarded in the 49th minute when a Giggs low cross confused the Roma defense and Ronaldo slid in to score his second goal of the game. Carrick then scored a repeat of the first goal to make it 6-0 for United.
Roma got a consolation goal in the 69th minute through de Rossi but the game was over for the Italians when Patrice Evra scored in United's seventh goal to pour more misery on Roma. United now face either AC Milan or Bayern Munich in the semifinals.
In the other match, Chelsea came from behind to score a late goal to defeat Valencia 2-1 to keep alive their dream of a quadruple. The first leg of the semifinal matches will be played on April 24-25.
