Irked over the seven-point guidelines issued by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to the selection committee that prevents them from interacting with the media or travel overseas with the Indian team, a number of selectors – at least three – are contemplating to quit the lucrative, but hazardous job.
Although a strongly-worded email sent to the selectors a week ago has angered them beyond description, the BCCI is learnt to be soft on the selection committee chairman and former Indian star batsman Dilip Vengsarkar and permit him to write columns in newspapers. Vengsarkar is reported to have taken up the matter with the board saying that writing columns was his only source of earning a living.
According to sources, the code of conduct for the selectors says that they will not speak to the media and not more than one selector can be present during an international match at home.
Besides, it says that the selectors cannot travel abroad for matches and will not be permitted to enter the players’ dressing room during the match. At the same time, it restricts the selectors from being part of any business group that has vested interest in cricket or associating themselves with any player’s agents.
Moreover, the guidelines enforce that the selectors must watch more domestic matches and not to conduct any Press conference or speak to the media after a selection process. They have been directed to initiate all actions in consultations with the BCCI secretary Niranjan Shah.
Substantiating the board’s actions, Shah said that he was of the opinion that ‘the members of the selection committee and the members of the team should stay away from the media and should not give any statements to the media’.
Meanwhile, Vengsarkar is irritated with the BCCI for allegedly infringing with his right to earn a living by writing columns. He has pointed out that when the National Cricket Academy chairman Ravi Shastri is allowed to write columns, how the board can prevent him from doing so as both the jobs are honorary in nature.
