MONDAY, April 28, (News Locale) - He is a feisty bloke, of that there is no doubt, but Harbhajan Singh finds no supporters this time around after having slapped teammate Sreesanth in the ongoing Indian Premier League.
Bhajji as he is popularly known is alleged to have slapped Sreesanth following Mumbai Indians' loss to the Kings of Punjab XI. The whole incident was unsavory and Kings skipper Yuvraj Singh termed Harbhajan's behavior "unacceptable."
Just a few months ago Harbhajan was at the center of a storm involving Andrew Symonds, who alleged the off-spinner had racially abused him.
Harbhajan was banned for three tests by referee Mike Proctor, but the BCCI threatened to call off the tour unless the ban was revoked. The three Test match ban was later revoked on appeal and Harbhajan was fined.
On India's triumphant return from the land of Oz, Harbhajan once again landed in hot water for his alleged comments o Australian stars Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist. Harbhajan reportedly told Delhi-based tabloid Mail Today that Hayden was a "big liar" and that Gilchrist was "no saint."
Cricket Australia took strong exception to these remarks even though Harbhajan denied making them. CA chief executive James Sutherland wrote in a letter to the Indian Board to take action against Harbhajan.
Niranjan Shah the Secretary of the BCCI responded by saying that Bhajji had been warned and asked to refrain from commenting about the Australian series.
While the above incidents involved cricketers from other countries, this time it is Harbhajan's own India mate Sreesanth. The Kerala lad told a local television channel that it was more of a slugfest than a slap.
Bhajji has been suspended from the IPL pending a hearing on Monday. Match Referee Farokh Engineer is reported to have video evidence, which the BCCI has made a central premise in the hearing.
If found guilty, Harbhajan faces a minimum 10-match ban from the Indian Premier League or alternatively he could be banned from five Test matches.
Whatever the outcome of the hearing, one thing is for certain, Bhajji needs to control his temper and control it fast unless he wants to be remembered for his off-field antics rather than his on-field achievements.
