Karachi, June 6 (ANI): Even after Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Asif’s urine sample tested negative for any drug yesterday, PCB authorities, who are trying their every bit to defend the bowler, are apprehensive that he has only 50 percent chances of escaping punishment, which included jail term.

“After having taken a thorough look at his situation, I believe he has a 50-50 chance of avoiding any punishment,” an unidentified PCB official said last evening.

Meanwhile, top PCB officials have been working ‘behind the scenes’ to get Asif off the hook by trying to use their connections in the influential circles in the UAE. But, in spite of all the efforts, the Board official’s admission that a jail-term for Asif remains a possibility comes as a big jolt for the pacer, regarded among the best in the world, reported The News.

However, the official said that the PCB will continue trying its best to get Asif back home. “Our biggest target is to get the player released and bring him back home on the first available flight,” the PCB official said.

Asif appeared before a Dubai prosecutor on Thursday and recorded a statement, that the drug found in his possession was a “medicine given to him by a hakim” in Pakistan, said the official.

No charges have yet been framed against him, but the case was deferred till Sunday as Friday and Saturday are holidays in Dubai.

Asif (25) was caught with an illegal substance in his wallet on Sunday at the Dubai and was detained by the local authorities, who follow one of the world’s strictest anti-drugs law. At the time of being caught, the bowler was coming home from India after having appeared in the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League. (ANI)
