MONDAY, Feb 11, (News Locale) - For the first Sony Ericsson handsets will operate on the Windows Mobile platform instead of the Symbian operating system, according to the company, which announced the Xperian X1 smartphone just before the start of the Mobile World Congress wireless telecom trade show in Barcelona.
The Xperian X1 smartphone will run on Windows Mobile 6 and will feature a QWERTY keyboard as well. The device includes a 3-inch VGA touchscreen and will support GPS and Wi-Fi. The X1 will also offer support for the HSDPA and HSUPA networks.
"XPERIA X1 lets you interact with your phone in different ways. Touch, full QWERTY keyboard, 4-way key and optical joystick navigation. Switch seamlessly between operation modes," the company said in a released statement.
Sony officials however did not confirm that Windows Mobile would be the chosen platform for the Xperia series. The X1 is expected to ship in the second half of the year.
In other announcements, Sony Ericsson also unveiled G900 and G700 touchscreen handsets and the Walkman W980 music phone. The G900 boasts of a 5-megapixel camera, while the G700 has a 3.2 megapixel camera.
The Walkman W980 music phone is a clamshell that is shored up with 8GB of storage space. The device has an FM transmitter that allows users to play music on their car or home music systems.
The announcement of Windows Mobile on the X1 was the main highlight and now means that apart from Finnish mobile giant Nokia all major handset makers have devices that run on Microsoft's mobile OS.
