THURSDAY, June 26, (News Locale) - Indian customers can now book their 3G iPhone as Vodafone and Airtel threw open online bookings for the most awaited product on Indian markets. Both companies have introduced pre-registration for the iPhone 3G on their Web sites.
While there is no confirmation on launch dates, what is clear is that Apple's iconic iPhone will hit Indian shoes sometime this year possibly September. The iPhone 3G was released by Apple CEO Steve Jobs at the Apple World-Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) earlier this month.
The iPhone has gained massive popularity because of its ability to allow users to play music, use the cell phone and also enable web browsing from a single device.
Some of the novel features in the new version include fast 3G wireless technology, GPS mapping, support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new App Store. Users will be able to download innovative applications using the App Store, while the 3G feature allows then to download email over fast 3G cellular networks.
Support for Microsoft Exchange Server will bring push e-mail, contacts and calendar, remote wipe, global contacts access, and auto-discovery to the iPhone.
The iPhone was launched on June 29 in the United States and is available through AT&T exclusively. Apple said that it had sold 1.4 million iPhones in November last year and expects to sell 10 million devices by end of this year.
Apple also announced the launch of the iPhone in 10 other countries including India recently. In the Asian zone Apple appears to be looking at non-exclusive agreements as the iPhone is due to debut on Vodafone as well as Bharti Airtel in India.
The 8GB iPhone 3G will start shipping worldwide on July 11 although there is not realistic date for the Indian launch. This may also be because the Indian government has not issued final guidelines on the auction of 3G (third generation telephony) spectrum and licenses in the country.
In an advertisement in The Times of India, Vodafone said as much, adding that some 3G features may not work in India as the iPhone is currently compatible only with 2G networks.
