With an eye on this year’s Christmas shopping fever, Japanese consumer electronics giant Sony Corp., announced cuts in its videogame console Play Station 3 across Europe, Australia, Middle East and Africa.
The PlayStation 3 price cuts are a strategy adopted to get ahead of the price war with rival products, Microsoft’s Xbox and Nintendo’s Wii consoles, both of which have touched the magic 10 million figure in sales world wide.
The Playstation 3 will be cheaper by 100 to 200 Euros in the European market. Sony is also unveiling a new model with a 40-gigabyte memory on October 10th.It will sell at 399 Euros, around 200 Euros less than Sony’s 60 Gigabyte PS unit.
The new unit is unique as it will not have backward compatibility. It lacks the PS2 chip need for effecting backward compatibility. Also the new unit will not have only two USB ports as compared to four in the old one and also lacks a multi memory card port. The good news is that there are more games coming around the corner – around 65 videogame titles for PlayStation 3 alone.
The Playstation 3 has so far not been as popular as its rivals and sold only half as many units as the Xbox and the Wii, which have touched ten million in sales. In August, the firm unveiled a widget, which allowed the Playstation 3 to receive and record high definition T.V. programs in a bid to show its versatility. The Play T.V is also able to transfer T.V content to a PSP, Sony’s hand held Game console.
The price cut of PlayStation3 means that it sells at the same rate as the Xbox 360 elite, which has a whopping 120 GB hard drive. The New Value Pack of PS3-60 includes a backward compatible 60 GB PS3, one six axis wireless controller, and two first party titles. The new value pack costs 349 GBP, lesser than current price of 425 GBP.
Sony has announced brisk sales of PSP Slim and Lite systems in Japan and is now looking at Europe to get ahead with PS 3 as well.
