MONDAY, August 11, (News Locale) - Sony and Nintendo are predicted to have a bright future with former SCEE president Chris Deering expressing confidence that the two companies will capture more than 90 percent of hardware console market in the next three years.
Presenting his data at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival on Monday, Deering said that the number of active installed base will nearly double from 316 million to 500 million by 2011 with both Sony and Nintendo accounting for nearly 460 million of the total units sold.
Nintendo DS sales are expected to breach the 150 million mark by 2011 while Wii would have sold nearly 80 million units. Deering expects Sony's PS3 to put behind its slow start to increase its installed base to 70 million while PS2 and PSP will sell 90 million and 70 million units respectively.
The other major hardware console player Microsoft's Xbox franchise will grow by a decent margin and will have an active installed base of around 40 million by 2011, Deering added.
Deering, who is the Edinburgh Interactive Festival chairman, revealed that he reached the data by using data from Screen Digest and IDG along with a number of other factors such as emergence of new game engines, growth in the grey gamer and high definition market and the rise in number of gamers, which he predicts will reach 2.5 billion by the next three years.
