Romanian president Traian Basescu has said to Microsoft boss Bill Gates that pirating Windows has helped Romania discover computers. Gates is currently touring Romania as a part of his promotional campaign of Microsoft's newest Operating System offering, Vista. Speaking at a joint press conference, Basescu praised the piracy of Windows saying that this was the foundation stone of the country's IT industry.
"Piracy helped the young generation discover computers. It set off the development of the IT industry in Romania. It helped Romanians improve their creative capacity in the IT industry, which has become famous around the world. Ten years ago, it was an investment in Romania's friendship with Microsoft and with Bill Gates", Basescu announced at the press conference. For those who were interested in how Gates responded to the comments, it was an anti-climax as he had no option but to keep quiet about it. Figures reveal that over 70 percent of the softwares used in Romania are pirated while the country is one of the main source of viruses and hackers.
