THURSDAY, April 17, (News Locale) - Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) has taken a welcome step in favor of customers by offering free software to help them track stolen mobiles. The software created by Micro Technologies is called Lost Mobile Tracking System (LMTS).
This mobile security feature will be initially available in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. MTL is offering the free software for download through GPRS. Over 250 models of handsets are compatible with the software.
When a mobile is stolen and a new SIM (subscriber identity module) card added to it, the installed software will send the new number through an SMS alert to an alternative phone number or an e-mail id provided by the customer. The International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the handset is also stored by the software.
When sending an SMS alert about the new number being used on the handset, the software also alerts the customer about the current location of the handset. The new service is available starting April 15 for a monthly subscription of Rs 30.
Mobile theft is a big issue in India as thieves can easily replace SIM cards and begin using their "new" mobile. With the introduction of the LMTS software it is hoped that thieves will be deterred and not snatch mobiles from wherever they find them.
