FRIDAY, August 8, (News Locale) - One month after it was launched to global accolades, the Apple iPhone 3G will make its debut in India on Airtel and Vodafone networks on August 22. Gadget lovers in India are already queuing up to get their hands on the 3G version of Apple's most popular product.
Airtel and Vodafone Essar subscribers have already been asked to pre-register for the iPhone on the companies' respective websites and one would imagine it is these people who will get the first iPhone devices in India.
The iPhone 3G was released by Apple CEO Steve Jobs at the Apple World-Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. The iPhone has gained massive popularity because of its ability to allow users to play music, use the cell phone and also enable web browsing from a single device.
Some of the novel features in the new version include fast 3G wireless technology, GPS mapping, support for enterprise features like Microsoft Exchange, and the new App Store.
Users will be able to download innovative applications using the App Store, while the 3G feature allows then to download email over fast 3G cellular networks.
Support for Microsoft Exchange Server will bring push e-mail, contacts and calendar, remote wipe, global contacts access, and auto-discovery to the iPhone.
While both Bharti Airtel and Vodafone are mum about the pricing details, analysts expect them not to subsidize the iPhone and it could end up costing as much as Rs 20,000. In the US the 3G version is priced between $199 (Rs 8,000) to $299 (Rs 12,000).
Apple iPhone was launched ion June 29 last year and is available through AT&T exclusively in the US. However Apple has now decided to allow multiple carriers to offer the iPhone in Asia.
