FRIDAY, JAN 11, (News Locale) - In a major announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2008, Intel Corp presented 16 new processors running on its 45nm Penryn chips, including the first for laptops based on Intel Centrino processors.
The latest announcement increases the number of processors based on Penryn chips to 32. Intel revealed that four of the 16 processors are designed for servers, five for laptops and 7 for desktops. The processors make use of a new technology called as Deep Power Down Technology and there by reducing the power consumed when not in function. Other features include design and cache improvements to deliver better graphics and video performance compared to the 65nm processors.
With Intel going all out to project its new technological advances, analysts believe that the latest announcement, coupled with Intel's promise to unveil its Nehalem processors later this year will give it a huge advantage over rival AMD.
Says Jim McGregor, an analyst at In-Stat, "AMD has definitely dug a hole for themselves. It looks like they'll be behind the eight ball for the next two years. If they come out with Barcelona and Phenom this quarter, it will help, but with Intel coming out with Nehalem at the end of this year, that hurts. They need to get on the ball and get some new solutions out there."
