The first-ever annual Google Zeitgeist report for India mirrors that social networking services are rapidly gaining popularity among the country’s Internet users.

While Orkut, a favorite amongst the younger generation, has topped the list under the group ‘fast rising search queries’, YouTube and Gmail followed closely. The fact that the Indians are becoming more online search savvy to fulfill their day-to-day requirements is evident from Google, Map, Yahoo Mail, Technology, Yahoo, Indian Railways and Zapak coming under the top ten ‘fast rising search queries of 2007’.

The Google Zeitgeist’ report for India further confirms that Aishwarya Rai still remains the most favorite Bollywood personality searched by the Indian netizens, greenhorn Deepika Padukone too bagged her place in the list of Top 10 searches on the Internet. On the other hand, the report reveals that Indian tennis pin-up girl Sania Mirza is the most favorite sportsperson searched on Google and Mahatma Gandhi was the most searched political leader on the Internet.

Among the Bollywood lot searched on the Internet, besides Aishwarya Rai, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Shahrukh Khan, Mallika Sherawat, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee too find places of prominence.  According to a statement released by Google, Deepika Padukone’s popularity soared the most during 2007.

On the sports front, apart from Sania Mirza, Maria Sharapova, Sachin Tendulkar, John Cena, David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Rahul Dravid, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly and Anna Kournikova found their places amongst the Top 10 online searches from India.

Again, according to the Google Zeitgeist that signifies the spirit of the times and is worked out by looking at the average of the most popular and fast-rising search queries tendered to Google by the Indian Internet users, while Hollywood presentation ‘Spiderman’ was the most visited film site, Kerala topped the list of most searched tourist destination followed by Singapore.

Releasing the report, Google stated that social networking tops the list closely trailed by other platforms of online interaction. It said that while composing Google Zeitgeist report for 2007, the company examined the average of the billions of search queries Indian netizens carried out on Google. I

n preparing the final list, Google examined several thousand most popular searches during 2007 and ranked them on the basis of the proportion of their popularity compared to 2006.

It is not surprising to read about the most searched list. Aishwarya retains public interest and still dominates the mind set of aspiring Indians who wish to get success like her.
