WEDNESDAY, JAN 23, (News Locale) - World of Warcraft's (WoW) rise in popularity continues to increase with its maker, Blizzard Entertainment announcing that the number of subscribers for the multiplayer online role-playing game has passed 10 million.
According to Blizzard, over 5.5 million of the subscribers are from Asia, 2.5 from North America and 2 million from Europe. The company also put forth their definition of a subscriber, stating that only those subscribers who have an active prepaid card or have paid a subscription fee were considered. Blizzard added that they have not counted gamers who are playing on free promotional subscriptions or expired subscriptions.
Announcing the data, Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment said, "It's very gratifying to see gamers around the world continuing to show such enthusiasm and support for World of Warcraft. We're always pleased to welcome new players to the game, and we're looking forward to sharing the next major content update with the entire community in the months ahead."
Launched in November 2004, WOW has proved to be one of the most popular games of all time. The original game became the fastest-selling PC game of all time, selling more than 240,000 units on the first day, a record that was broken by its first expansion pack, The Burning Crusade, which sold over 2.4 million copies in 24 hours.
Morhaime revealed that the second expansion for the game, Wrath of the Lich King, will be released later this year.
