MONDAY, Mar 24, (News Locale) - Pressure continues to mount on telecom companies providing BlackBerry services in India with the Department of Telecom (DoT) sending out a stern warning to the concerned operators to resolve the security issues raised by various security agencies in the country.
The DoT has ordered the telecom companies to put up a security system in place by March 31. It has also warned that the failure to do so will result in the discontinuation of BlackBerry services for their customers.
BlackBerry has become hugely popular among the country's corporate circle with over 4 lakh users subscribing for the service since its launch two years ago. All the major telecom companies provide BlackBerry services in the country including Airtel, Reliance Communications and Vodafone.
The encryption process developed by Research in Motion (RIM) makes use of servers present in countries such as Russia, United States or Canada with not even a single server located in India.
The Indian security agencies have belatedly woken up to the fact that spies and terrorists can make use of this situation and smuggle out security information outside the country since the messages sent through the service cannot be accessed by local security authorities.
Talks are on between the government and RIM with the Canada based company stating that they will respect the regulatory requirements of the Indian government.
BlackBerry is a wireless handheld device, which was launched in 1999. The handheld supports push e-mail, mobile telephone, text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing and other wireless information services and is immensely popular worldwide. It is estimated that there are at least 400,000 BlackBerry users in India.
