SUNDAY, JAN 27, (News Locale) - A 2,000 feet long asteroid is expected to pass very near to the Earth next week but astronomers assured that there will be no damage done by the passing.
NASA officials have been tracking the asteroid, named 2007 TU24, since October last year and the size of the object is somewhere around 150 meters to 610 meters. The asteroid is expected to pass 334,000 miles away from the planet and that will be the closest that any other asteroid is expected to pass in the next two decades.
"This will be the closest approach by a known asteroid of this size or larger until 2027. There is no reason for concern. On the contrary, Mother Nature is providing us an excellent opportunity to perform scientific observations", said Don Yeomans from NASA's Near-Earth Object Programme Office.
NASA added that while the asteroid will not be visible to the naked eye, amatuer astronomers can have a peek of the object using telescopes of 3 inches or more should the weather permit.
