Page 1 of 2 FRIDAY, April 18, (News Locale) - Almost 15 months after Apple's iconic iPhone was released in the US, it is finally coming to India this September. Apple iPhone is one of the most popular devices as it combines a cell phone, a music player and a web browser in one device.
The Business Standard reports that iPhone in India will be unveiled by Vodafone, which recently entered the Indian market with its acquisition of Hutch. The Indian edition of the iPhone will retail for Rs 27,200 and Rs 28,000.
Initially only the 8GB version will be available, while the 16 GB version will debut in mid-2009.
Vodafone sources were tight-lipped about the company's plans, but sources within the company told the paper that a deal was imminent and that iPhones available in India could be "unlocked", but the company was currently not in favor of such features.
The iPhone was launched on June 29 in the United States and is available through AT&T exclusively. Apple said that it had sold 1.4 million iPhones in November last year and expects to sell 10 million devices by end of the year.. However the popularity of the iPhone and its restricted use on one network has spurred hackers to "unlock" the iPhone so as to make it workable on other networks as well.
Apple estimated that 250,000 of the 1.4 million iPhones sold by it were unlocked. Apple managed to prevent this by releasing an update that turned unlocked iPhones into "bricks." But hackers somehow circumvented this as well. Nevertheless the iPhone continues to be a sought after device.
