Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has revealed its newest chipset that for the first time integrates the ATI Radeon X1250 graphics processor, which means that users will now not require a new add-on card.
Unveiling the 690 chipset, Chris Evenden, director of public relations for visual and media business at AMD, said that since the company has built the chipset on its own, instead of relying on outside companies, it will give a competitive edge over rival Intel Corp.
The company said that the new chipset is the result of its $5.4 billion takeover of ATI in July last year and allows AMD to create a complete skeleton for a PC from a single source. Adding high-end graphic cards to the chipset means that users do not have to buy a new card, therefore reducing the overall cost of a PC.
AMD said that the new chipset will be available on the motherboards designed by more than 10 companies including Asustek Computer Inc. and Elitegroup Computer Systems Co. Phil Eisler, corporate vice president and general manager, AMD Chipset Division said, "With its leading image quality and 3D graphics capabilities, the AMD 690 series chipset is a proven performer, easily handling the demanding workloads of today’s PC users."
Some of the features of the 690 chipset include integrated digital visual interface, high-definition multimedia interface outputs for video, hardware decoding for MPEG2 and video compression technology used with DVDs. The 690 chipset is expected to be priced at $80.
