MONDAY, Mar 17, (News Locale) - The supposed health benefits of drinking wine just got a knock out blow after researchers said wine affected the brain in a more adverse manner as compared to beer. Thousands of people consume wine everyday believing that it is beneficial in preventing heart disease.

In fact there are plenty of studies that discuss wine's good affects on the heart, particularly in lowering cholesterol and high blood pressure. These benefits were attributed to the presence of a molecule called Resveratol. However this is the first study that has examined wine in relation to its actions on the brain.

Researchers at the Göttingen University in Germany said that wine drinkers had a smaller hippocampus as compared to beer drinkers. The hippocampus is a vital area of the brain and plays a critical role in memory and spatial awareness.

The researchers scanned the brains of the participants and compared them with healthy adults. Participants were also asked to state their preferred drink.

Reporting in the journal Alcohol and Alcoholics, the researchers revealed that hippocampus in wine drinkers was 10 percent smaller than that of healthy adults. In non-alcoholics, the hippocampus measured 3.85ml, while in wine drinkers it measured just 2.8ml. In contrast beer drinkers had 3.4 ml of hippocampus in their brains, while other spirit drinkers had 2.9 ml.

Beer drinkers also had low levels of a compound called homocysteine, which plays a role in the development of heart disease, stroke and dementia. While some studies have advocated the use of wine in moderate amounts, it must be noted that alcohol in any form is harmful to health.

The article provides no context for the findings or details needed to evaluate it. Did the researchers (not the journalist) conclude that beer was responsible for a larger hippocampus? If so, how did they decide differences in hippocampus size were traceable to the various drinks? What was the sample size? Many alcoholic beverage consumers drink varying amounts of all three types - was this accounted for? And finally, given that the article correctly cites various studies attributing health benefits to moderate drinking, why does it end with "alcohol in any form is harmful to health"?
