The Modern American Does Not Get Adequate Sleep: CDC |

FRIDAY, Feb 29, (News Locale) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has revealed that modern Americans are less likely to be freshened up in the morning as they rarely get a good night's sleep.
Chronic sleep disorders have become a way of life in the country with most of the individuals in the working age bracket of 18 and 34 reporting a lack of sleep. Overall the CDC surveyed 19,589 adults in Delaware, Hawaii, New York and Rhode Island.
All participants were asked about the quality of sleep they got in the last month. Some 10 percent admitted they did not get sufficient rest on all 30 days, while 38 percent admitted they had restless sleep for seven or more days in the past month.
According to the National Sleep Foundation young adults need at least 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night and from the CDC survey, it is clear many are not getting that amount of rest. In a surprising twist the CDC study also found that people living in Hawaii seemed to get better sleep than their counterparts residing in the other three states surveyed.
A National Health Interview Study also found that most adult Americans were getting just six hours of sleep. The study lasting from 1985 to 2006 said that 20 percent of people in 45-64 age group had reported getting just six hours of sleep every day in 1985. Almost two decades later this number had jumped to 30 percent.
"At night, we're doing everything except for sleeping -- we're on the Internet, we may be watching TV. With these new lifestyles we have kind of taken sleep for granted as something that we can do when we have time or we can catch up on it on the weekends," said CDC behavioral scientist Lela McKnight-Eily, the lead author of the present study.
Chronic sleep loss has been associated with a number of sleep disorders, which in turn lead to obesity, diabetes and heart problems. Making sensible lifestyle choices so as to include a good night's sleep everyday may be the way to avoid health issues in future as well.
