SATURDAY, DEC 29, 2007, (News Locale) - If you are a connoisseur of chocolates and have been guzzling them regularly, think again for a recent study has claimed that the myth that chocolate is good for health, is actually misleading. According to an editorial in the renowned British medical journal ‘The Lancelet’, chocolates may after all not be all that good for your health
Coming close on a report that claims that flavanol-rich chocolate had a beneficial effect on circulation, the article says that although flavanols, derived from plant chemicals, protect the heart, normally chocolate manufacturers remove this owing to its bitter taste.
Absence of flavanols and presence of high quantity of fat and sugar makes chocolates harmful for the heart and arteries. Even white or milk chocolates offer no health benefits, the report says.
A research conducted by Dr Andreas Flammer and his team from the Cardiovascular Centre in Zurich on 11 heart transplant patients, have claimed that flavanol-rich chocolates open up blood vessels and improve the functioning of the heart.
Similarly, another study has ascertained that consuming small amounts of dark chocolates can help to ease high blood pressure. However, the report published in The Lancelot argues that dark chocolates may not essentially contain flavanols as they can be colored even after the chemical is removed from the delicacy.
The report further states that normally chocolate manufacturers do not provide any information on their product pack regarding the presence or absence of flavanols making it difficult for the consumers to ascertain the benefits or harms of consuming the products.
The study suggests that people consuming even moderate amounts of dark chocolates should essentially control their diet with a view to balance their calorie intakes.
