FRIDAY, July 4, (News Locale) - Regular sexual activity has been touted for men as a way to preserve their fertility. Now Finnish researchers are reporting that older man may be able to stave off erectile dysfunction (ED) if they have regular sex at least once a week.
Researchers at the University of Tampere, Finland also said men who have sex at least three times a week reduce their risk of developing erectile dysfunction by at least 75 percent as compared to men who have sexual activity on a sporadic basis.
The study involved 989 Finnish men aged 55 to 75 who answered a questionnaire mailed to them. At the beginning of the study none of them had erectile dysfunction. Only those men who returned the questionnaire five years later were included in the study.
Among the participants, four out of five of the men were married or cohabitating and over 50% were overweight. Additionally nearly half had at least one chronic medical condition. Lead researcher Juha Koskimaki and colleagues report increased risk of erectile dysfunction in men with some medical condition or overweight who had sex less than once a week.
Compared to this group, men who had sex at least three times a week had a significantly decreased risk of erectile dysfunction. Another finding was related to morning erections. Men who had less than one morning erection per week were 2.5 times more likely to get erectile dysfunction compared with men who have two or three morning erections per week.
Reporting in the July 2008 issue of The American Journal of Medicine, the Finnish researchers say the study had one limitation as they had not asked men about masturbation.
"Continued sexual activity decreases the incidence of erectile dysfunction in direct proportion to coital frequency." the researchers concluded.
According to the National Institutes of Health, erectile dysfunction is common in older men although it is not a part of aging. Modern day medicines like Viagra do treat ED successfully, but these drugs have some side effects as well.
As the above study suggests, regular sexual activity may be the answer to prevent the onset of erectile dysfunction with age.
