Men with fertility problems are known to keep away from having regular sex so as to improve sperm quality and thus increase chances of pregnancy in their partners. However a new study stresses that daily and regular sex is a must for men to rectify damaged sperm as well as boost fertility.
Researchers at the Sydney University in Australia say that abstaining from sex for days together might affect male fertility by producing sperm of poor quality. Lead researcher Dr David Greening of Sydney University told the American Society for Reproductive Medicine conference abstaining for many days before ovulation might increase number and volume of sperm, but the DNA damage will intensify in such cases.
The researchers detailed their findings of a pilot study involving 42 men, whose sperm showed abnormal shape on microscopic analysis.
Researchers asked the men to ejaculate daily for seven days and compared sperm quality after seven days with the prior sample. Some 37 men had less sperm damage after this exercise, they reported.
"Ejaculating more frequently, that is daily, improves sperm DNA damage in most men by a decent amount. Prior to in vitro fertilisation (IVF), for example, men are abstaining a lot more than normal and perhaps sperm DNA increases more than usual," Dr Greening explained.
According to the World Health Organization, 50 and 80 million people across the world battle infertility. Male infertility can result from low sperm count, a varicocele, abnormal shape of the sperm and an underlying medical problem.
However as the above study stresses, abstaining might damage sperm quality even more although the volume might increase substantially.
