MONDAY, April 14, (News Locale) - Treating cancer using radiation and chemotherapy is a double-edged sword at best. While cancer cells are annihilated by both these therapies, healthy cells are also destroyed.
Now nanoparticles are emerging as innovative new methods to fight cancer. Kanzius RF therapy is one such innovation, which uses nanoparticles to "cook" the cancer cells using radio frequency waves. Not only is the cancer treated effectively by this method, the healthy cells are also not harmed.
John Kanzius, an inventor from Pennsylvania is credited with this new method that could revolutionize the treatment of a wide variety of cancers.
Kanzius, who is a retired radio and TV engineer, uses gold and silver nanoparticles to attach to the cancer cells, which are then bombarded with non-toxic radio waves. He himself underwent chemotherapy for leukemia in 2003 and 2004.
Kanzius' therapy is being tested at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
When gold or silver particles enter the cancer cells, the radio waves allow these particles to heat up and cook the cancer cells.
Gold nanoparticles are traditionally used as drug delivery systems because of their ability to penetrate the cells. Dr. Christopher Gannon, an assistant professor at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, explained that gold was preferred for the current therapy as it was FDA approved and well-tolerated by the body.
Currently the MD Anderson team is coating gold particles with c225, a molecule that can help the nanoparticles bind to cancer cells.
Chemotherapy is generally detested by cancer patients because of the unwanted side effects, which include nausea, loss of hair, infertility and general discomfort associated with it. Kanzius' therapy promises to avoid all these effects yet cure the cancer.
